About Us

Who we are, where we come from, and where we're headed as a church family

Who we are

On Sunday mornings, (10:30 am) we have around 350 in our worship assembly and there's always room for more. When you come to League Street you will be greeted with a friendly smile by a group of people who are genuinely glad that you're here; people who mean it when they say, "It was so nice to meet you and I hope you will come back again whenever you're in Sulphur Springs."

At League Street, you will find Bible classes for all ages, a place where you can "fit in" and build relationships with people just like yourself as you study the Word of God. The worship assemblies are times of praise and prayer, sharing in the Lord's Supper and giving, along with strong Biblical preaching focused on giving us practical application to live our lives as Christ.

We encourage you to join us as we journey together to be a family for your family!

Where we come from

The League Street Church of Christ has a rich history in Northeast Texas. Some of the members are direct descendants from a wagon train of believers who were known as the "Church on Wheels", arriving in Texas on January 17, 1836. Most of the families traveling on this wagon train received land in Hopkins County. The church was established by the time the county was organized. The original seat of the county was at Tarrant, located six miles north of Sulphur Springs. After the war between the States, Federal troops moved the county seat to Sulphur Springs and the Church of Christ was established in 1869. Few records were kept until the 1920's when the property on Jefferson Street was purchased and the building was erected. The congregation called this location home until 1983 when property was purchased on League Street and a new facility was built.

From 1983 to the present, League Street has partnered up with God to accomplish many great works for His glory. The leadership has implemented an outreach program of evangelism where Bible study is encouraged at all times. A benevolent program shares food and clothing to those who are less fortunate. Our family believes strongly in prayer and lifts up prayer requests daily for those who are in need. We are truly a friendly group of people who are struggling well with life and striving to be a family for all families.

What We Believe

What God cares about is whether or not our lives are being changed as we put our faith in His Son, Jesus Christ and whether the doctrine we learn expands our love for God and people. That kind of transformation produces in us the fruit of the Spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. We use the term "core beliefs" to express the beliefs that we, as a church, should be united around. To use a fruit metaphor, these beliefs contain the seeds of what will become many other beliefs and practices of the church.

We've determined our "core beliefs" so that we can speak with one voice as a church family, not reacting judgmentally towards others, and always living a life that reflects the love and forgiveness of God. These are our core beliefs at League Street:

  • We believe there is one God - Father, Son, and Holy Spirit - who is eternal and who created all things. (Deuteronomy 6:4; Isaiah 48:16; Matthew 28:19; 2 Corinthians 13:14)
  • We believe in the inspiration and infallibility of the Bible as God's spoken word, which is His authoritative word for our lives. (2 Timothy 3:16-17; Hebrews 4:12; 2 Peter 1:20-21)
  • We believe in the deity, pre-existent, virgin birth, and incarnation of Jesus Christ. (John 1:1-5, 14, 18; Luke 1:26-38; Galatians 4:4; Philippians 2:5-7)
  • We believe in the glorious, bodily resurrection and ascension of Jesus Christ and await His second coming. (John 20; 1 Corinthians 15:1-11; 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18)
  • We believe that salvation is possible only through the gracious work of God and is available to all through faith in Jesus Christ. (Ephesians 2:8-9)
  • We believe that a person demonstrates their faith and trust in Jesus by confessing their belief in Jesus Christ and repenting of their sins and by being baptized in water for the remission of sins. (Matthew 28:19; Acts 2:38; Romans 6:1-4; Colossians 2:11-12)
  • We believe that the Holy Spirit is a gift and lives within every Christian. (Acts 2:38; 1 Corinthians 6:19, 12:13; Ephesians 1:13-14)
  • We believe that the church is the body of Christ and is comprised of all baptized believers. (Acts 2:47; Ephesians 1:22-23; Colossians 1:18; Revelation 7:13-17)
  • We believe that we must make disciples. (Matthew 28:18-20; Acts 1:8)
  • We believe as Christians we are to meet as a group of disciples to remember the death and burial of Jesus Christ in observing the Lord's Supper, to encourage one another, to sing praises to God, to pray together, to offer monetary contributions, and teach from God's Word. (1 Corinthians 11:23-29, 16:1-2; Ephesians 5:18-20; 1 Thessalonians 5:17-18; Hebrews 10:19-25)
  • We believe all Christians share the hope of eternal life which has been promised to all who have been born into God's family. Our inheritance is heaven, a place of great rewards and rest for those who faithfully follow Jesus. (Matthew 25:14-30; 1 Peter 1:3-4)
